Feast Day: January 6
Famous people in the world are often known for being rich, strong, or famous. But Saint André Bessette was special for a very different reason — he was small, weak, poor, and couldn’t even read until he was grown up! Still, he loved God with his whole heart, and God used him in amazing ways.
Saint André was born in Canada in 1845. His name was Alfred Bessette, and he came from a big family with twelve children! His parents, Isaac and Clothilde, loved their children and taught them to pray together. A big wooden cross hung on their wall, reminding everyone that Jesus was with them.
When Alfred was just a little boy, his father died in an accident, and a few years later, his mother also died. Alfred was very sad and went to live with his aunt and uncle. He was small and often sick, but he prayed a lot and trusted God.
Alfred tried many jobs — working on farms, making shoes, and helping in shops — but because he was weak, he couldn’t keep any of them for long. He was poor, but he never gave up. He always said, “God will take care of me.”
One day, a kind priest named Father Provencal noticed how much Alfred loved to pray. He told him, “You should ask St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, to help you.” Alfred listened — and from that day on, he prayed to St. Joseph every day!
When Alfred grew up, he wanted to serve God completely, so he joined a group of holy men called the Congregation of the Holy Cross. That’s when he took a new name: Brother André. His job was simple — he opened the doors for visitors, answered the bell, and greeted people kindly. But everyone who met him felt something special — Brother André made them feel God’s love.
People soon began coming to him for prayers and blessings, especially when they were sick. Brother André always prayed to St. Joseph, and many people were healed! But Brother André would smile and say,
“It is not I who heal. It is God, through St. Joseph.”
Brother André wanted everyone to love St. Joseph as much as he did, so he dreamed of building a church in St. Joseph’s honor. He started small — collecting coins from giving haircuts to students and saving every penny! Slowly, a little chapel was built, and people came from everywhere to pray.
Over time, that little chapel grew into a huge and beautiful basilica called St. Joseph’s Oratory, in Montreal, Canada. It is the biggest church in the world dedicated to St. Joseph!
When Brother André grew very old, he still prayed for others every day. Before he died, he whispered the name of his dear friend:
“St. Joseph.”
When he died at 91 years old, more than one million people came to say goodbye. They loved him because he was gentle, humble, and full of faith.
Saint André shows us that you don’t need to be big or strong or famous to do great things for God. All you need is love, faith, and a heart that trusts in Him.
Saint André Bessette, pray for us! St. Joseph, pray for us!
