Feast Day: April 11
A long time ago in Italy (the country shaped like a boot!), there lived a little girl named Gemma Galgani. She was born in 1878 in a small town called Lucca. Gemma was one of eight children, and she loved Jesus more than anything in the world.
Gemma’s mother and father were kind and loved God very much. Her mother would sit Gemma on her lap and tell her stories about Jesus and Mary. She would point to the crucifix and say, “Look how much Jesus suffered for us because He loves us.” Gemma never forgot that.
When Gemma was only seven years old, her dear mother died, and Gemma was very sad. But she prayed and trusted that her mother was in Heaven with Jesus. Even as a little girl, Gemma talked to her guardian angel and listened for God in her heart.
Gemma loved going to Mass, praying the Rosary, and helping poor people. She would ask her father for money or bread to give to those who were hungry. She loved to make Jesus happy!
When Gemma was nine years old, she received her First Holy Communion. Afterward, she said with joy,
“I feel a fire burning in my heart!”
That “fire” was her love for Jesus growing strong inside her.
As Gemma got older, she became very close to Jesus. She loved to think about His Passion — the time when He suffered and died on the Cross for us. She said she wanted to love Jesus so much that she could help Him carry His Cross.
Gemma also became very sick many times, but she always offered her pain to God. She would pray,
“Jesus, I love You. I want to suffer with You.”
And do you know what happened? Jesus blessed Gemma in a very special way. On her hands, feet, and heart, she received the stigmata — marks like the wounds of Jesus on the Cross. They appeared every Thursday night when she prayed and lasted until Friday afternoon. Gemma didn’t want anyone to notice, so she quietly wore gloves to church.
Gemma lived with a kind Catholic family called the Gianninis, who loved her like a daughter. She helped around the house, took care of the sick, and was always cheerful, gentle, and loving.
Even when Gemma was very ill, she smiled and prayed. On Good Friday, she offered all her pain to Jesus. The next day, Holy Saturday, in the year 1903, Gemma peacefully went to Heaven when she was only 25 years old.
People said her face looked so peaceful and beautiful, it was hard to believe she had died — it looked like she was smiling at Jesus!
Saint Gemma reminds us that we can love Jesus with our whole hearts, even when life is hard. She showed that prayer, kindness, and love can make every heart shine like Heaven.
Saint Gemma Galgani, pray for us to love Jesus in His Passion!
